Newry City U12 1 - 7 Windmill Stars

An under strength Newry side faught valliantly in this match but it was always going to be difficult with only eight players available. Newry were put under pressure immediately and spent most of the game camped in their own half. Another great performance from Jamie McManus at centre back and a fine finger tip save from James McParland keeping the boys in the game early on. Inevitably the pressure told and Newry went into half time 3-0 down.

The second half was much the same and with Newry pushing froward Windmill scored a couple of goals on the break. Highlights of the second half were a well worked goal building from the back with Jamie Lynch finishing a one on one with a deft strike into the corner of the net after a nice through ball from Jay Green, a magnificent free kick from Tiarnan Murphy that lifted over the wall and thundered against the post and a second finger tipped save from James McParland to send the ball over the crossbar.

Newry continued to fight to the very end even though there were only eight of them and Windmill with a sixteen man squad bringing on substitutes relentlessly. A special mention for Charlie Billham who ran his sicks off for the full 40 mins and Eoin Finnerty playing his first game at left back.

Even though the scoreline would suggest a poor performance by the Newry team it was far from that. The attitude of the boys was excellent and their determination is something to be admired.

We're getting there.

Man of the Match: All 8 players

James McParland, Ronan Dillon, Eoin Finnerty, Jamie McManus, Charlie Billham, Jamie Lynch, Tiarnan Murphy, Jay Green

Newry City U12 1 -3 Midway United

Newry City put in a good performance on Saturday against 2nd in the table Midway United. Playing the game with the bare nine players due to sickness and injury and Newry defender James Poucher deputising in goal the boys started well, playing some confident passing football. This confidence along with a lack of concentration saw Newry concede the first goal when they were caught in possession whilst everybody was piling forward leaving a 3 on 1 situation which Midway gratefully accepted. The game continued in the same fashion until half time with Jamie McManus, playing his first ever game as a centre back, getting in some excellent tackles.

HT Newry City 0 - 1 Midway Utd

The game restarted and the good passing play of both sides continued. On 30 minutes Newry gave away a free kick by the touchline and a beautiful ball into the box saw a Midway player rise highest and glance the ball into the net. A lovely goal that you don't normally see at this level. Newry continued to battle and their hard work was rewarded on the 37th minute when Charlie Billham won the header from a kick out which Tiernan Murphy controlled and then played a defence splitting ball through the middle which Jay Green ran onto and dispatched into the net for his first goal of the season.

With minutes remaining it was decided to push Eoin Flynn, who had been having an excellent game at centre back, into the midfield so as to offer more attacking options. Newry had a couple of chances that they couldn't convert and on the stroke of full time a mis-kick by the Newry keeper left a Midway player with a shot on goal which he finished. A valiant effort from boys in the end but unfortunately a 1 - 3 defeat.

Man of the Match: Jamie McManus. We may well have found Jamie a new position.
Special mention: Eoin Flynn and James Poucher. Both had great games playing out of their usual positions.

James Poucher, Ronan Dillon, Aiden Ovesen, Jamie McManus, Eoin Flynn, Tiernan Murphy, Charlie Billham, Matthew McGinn, Jay Green.

Newry City U12 0 - 10 Camlough Rovers

What can you say? A poor performance from Newry seen them 2 - 0 down within 90 seconds and struggle after that to get back into the game. With changes required in the defence due to absent players the defence looked disjointed and out of sorts and were punished often. Nothing else really to report other than the positive that the players never gave up which is encouraging. A lot of work required in training over the coming months to improve!!

Newry City U12 1 - 3 Annalong Rovers

The Newry City U12's left the field this weekend disappointed but can be proud of the effort put in against Annalong Rovers. In what was a closely contested game the run of the ball didn't seem to be falling Newry's way but maybe that is just a biased coach's perspective of it!!!

The game started evenly with both teams showing some premiership standard passing and moving. The deadlock being broken in the 7th minute when a ball was played through by an Annalong midfielder splitting the Newry defence leaving a 1 on 1 with the attacker and Newry keeper James McParland, the attacker winning this battle and leaving Newry 1-0 down. That score was doubled in the 18th minute when again a ball over the top left the same attacker and James McParland in a 1 on 1 again which the striker dispatched nicely leave James no chance.

Newry reacted positively and what can only be described as a beautifully chipped pass over the Annalong defence by Ronan Dillon put Robin Winvogel down the wing. Robin cut inside and hit a shot that bounced off the crossbar and away to safety.

HT Newry City 0 - 2 Annalong Rovers

Half time saw the introduction of Jay Green, Eoin Finnerty, James Poucher and Charlie Billham replacing Jamie McManus, Ronan Dillon, Fionn Palmer and Matthew McGinn.

With their new introductions Newry City continued their good pressure at the start of the second half and their efforts paid off in the 22nd minute when Eoin Flynn picked up the ball on the left wing, beat one player, cut inside and from an acute angle drilled a low shot into the far corner of the net.

Newry were now piling on the pressure and from the kick off this pressure told when Annalong gave Newry a free kick outside their area. Robin stood up and struck a shot that cannoned of the Annalong crossbar (again!!). Newry, smelling an equaliser pushed forward and on the 27th minute were dealt a cruel blow when another pass through the defence (this time offside but ignored by the referee) was finished despite the best efforts of Aiden Ovesen and James McParland.

Credit to Newry, who never gave up, pushed on to try and reduce the deficit. Another free kick from Robin in the 33rd minute was inches away from the top corner with the Annalong keeper just watching it skim the post and crossbar. Another goal never materialised and the game finished 3 - 1.

Paul Kennedy, Newry coach said after the game, "I'm proud of the effort put in by the boys and I look forward to watching the progress of these boys throughout the rest of the season. There is plenty of promise."

Newry City U12 3 - 4 Brookvale

Newry City were unlucky to come away from this game with no points to show for all their efforts. The game started evenly with both sides showing good attacking prowess. The deadlock was broken on eight minutes when Newry won a corner and the ball was expertly curled towards the goalmouth by Eoin Flynn. A mix up between Brookvale's keeper and his defence saw the ball finish in the back of the net with the goal being credited to Flynn. 1-0 Newry

Unfortunately the lead didn't last long for Newry as Brookvale immediately attacked from their centre and equalised making the score 1-1. Two minutes later a foul by Newry outside the box left Brookvale with a free kick which was nicely stuck by Rory Craven finishing in the back of the net. 2-1 Brookvale. In the 14th minute things started to look ominous for the boys in blue and white stripes as Brookvale made it 3-1.

Newry weren't about to give up and in the 18th minute a beautiful piece of individual skill saw Robin Windvogel dribble around three players and from a tight angle slip the ball past the Brookvale keeper.

HT Newry City U12 2 - 3 Brookvale

Half time saw three substitutions made by the Newry management with Jamie McManus, Eoin Finnerty and James McParland replacing Jay Green, Tiarnan Murphy and Matthew McGinn.

There was no change to the tempo in the second half as both sides played end to end attacking football and on 23 minutes Brookvale restored their two goal advantage with a well taken goal form their centre forward. Newry continued to battle and defend well with another excellent performance at the back from Aidan Ovesen. Their effort was rewarded on 39 minutes when with his back to goal Charlie Billham turned on a six pence and struck a sweet shot into the Brookvale goal. With a minute left Newry battled hard but could not get the goal required to salvage a point. The final whistle arrived with the Newry players dissapointed but they should take pride in the effort they put in.

The management can take a lot of positives from this performance and also the knowledge of what is required to make this promising young side into a great one.

Man of the Match: Aiden Ovesen

Newry City U12 3 - 5 Damolly Colts

After Newry's impressive display on Saturday expectation was high before kick off, but football has a way of bringing you down to earth and that was exactly what happened on Wednesday night against Damolly Colts.

Things started well for Newry and they took the lead through Robyn Windvogel and could have extended their lead when they should have had a penalty after Eoin Flynn was upended in the box but play was waved on and as can often happen Damolly went up the field and equalised. In fact Newry were lucky to get to half time on level terms as some hesitation in the defence allowed Damolly in on goal twice and but for a bit of luck City would have been behind.

The second half started as the first ended with Damolly in control and they went ahead after Newry tried to play football in defence. Damolly's third goal came the same way but to the boys credit they rolled up their sleeves and were soon level at 3-3 after Windvogel and Flynn capitalised on a period of pressure. But they could not kick on from there as it
just seemed that fate was against them, Damolly got a free kick after a passage of play where Newry could rightly have had their own free kick but it wasn't given and Damolly punished them again as they scored the best goal of the night an inch perfect free kick that McGinn could do nothing about.

As Newry pressed for yet another equaliser they were again guilty of overplaying in their own area and lost possession to set up the final goal of the night and ensure Damolly got the points. Disappointment was visible afterwards but the players know that mistakes cost them and after their recent good form they will be determined to put things right next time out.

Man of the match:  Eoin Flynn

Newry City U12 5 - 0 Moneyslane U12

On Saturday 10th Sept Newry U12s recorded their first win of the season in an impressive display against Moneyslane.

Right from the kick-
off they dominated and but for a few good saves by the keeper could have got their noses in front in the opening minutes, but they didn’t have to wait long as Robyn Windvogel scored after some nice interplay between Eoin Flynn and himself allowed Windvogel to break from midfield on 11 minutes and calmly slip the ball under the keeper.

The same player doubled the scoring on 17mins after he was played in down the flank by Aiden Ovesen. Windvogel turned his marker, not once but twice, and squeezed the ball in at a tight angle. The 2 nil score line at the break was no more than the team deserved; they were giving Moneyslane no time on the ball and the back line of Ovesen, Palmer and Dillon were calm on the ball and set up attacks from the back.

Newry started the second half in the same vein by bringing the game to their opponents and Charlie Billham was unlucky twice in quick succession not to stretch the lead further after he raced clear but was denied by one great save and one desperate clearance. Not to be disheartened though, Billham got his goal on 26 minutes after good work by Jay Green and Tiernan Murphy pressed the defence into giving away possession and the ball broke to Billham on the edge of the box and he calmly slotted home.

Further goals were added in the 31st and 37th minutes when Windvogel claimed his hat trick and Eoin Flynn got a goal his display merited. The score line could have been more emphatic had it not been for some harsh offside decisions as Murphy, Green and James McParland all had goals chalked off.

This was an excellent overall performance by the Newry boys and was reward for their hard work over the past weeks on the training pitch: solid in defence, determined in midfield and attack and when keeper Matthew McGinn was called upon he wasn’t found wanting.

Man of the match: Robyn Windvogel
