Shield Win
Newry City Reserves 3 Rockview 2 (after extra time)
N Barr, C McMahon, S Hand
A young Newry City reserve side secured a battling extra time victory over Rockview in the Mid Ulster Shield. Both teams deserve credit for their efforts in the face of a gale force wind that was blowing straight down the Showgrounds. Newry played with the wind behind them in the first half and were on top in the early stages. They were denied on several occasions by the Rockview goalkeeper before Neil Barr broke the deadlock with an effort from ten yards on. Newry doubled their late just before the break when the quick thinking Chris McMahon spotted the keeper off his line and promptly lobbed the ball over his head and into the net from fully forty yards out.
Newry found it tougher going in the second moiety as they were now playing into the teeth of the gale and Rockview scored twice to bring the game into extra time. Newry again had the wind behind them in the first period of extra time and Sean Hand stroked a delightful free kick from twenty yards to put the home side back into the lead. Neil Barr should have made sure when he rounded the keeper but shot into the side netting and the game ended in a 3-2 victory for Newry.
