Point Break
Newry earned a point against visiting Glentoran with a battling display at the Showgrounds. The balance of play was fairly even during the first half hour, before some late Glentoran pressure put Newry on the back foot. First, Ross Black, who had one of his best games in a Newry shirt, cleared off the line after Morley spilled a cross straight to Martyn. The same player saw another effort hit the outside of the post. Newry's best effort of the half saw Conor Downey drag the ball wide early on.
The second moiety was more eventful, albeit after another slow start to proceedings. Glentoran began to exert some serious pressure and Hazley cleared off the line with Morley making an excellent stop from the rebound. Morley was forced into another good stop from Waterworth but, with John Convery outstanding, Newry held firm. Indeed subs Murray and Graham gave the Newry attack more impetus and asked a few more questions of the visiting defence. Convery headed wide for Newry and late on Andy Graham almost nicked it when he fired just wide.
Newry worked hard for their point and will look to build on the solid defensive work with more threat at the other end of the pitch.
Newry: Morley, King, Black, Convery, Munster, Ferguson, Hazley, Downey (Murray), Davidson, Rowe, Keenan (Graham). Subs not used: Hagan, Feeney, McDonnell.
