Bread and Butter
Newry get back to league action on Saturday when we host Glebe Rangers at the Showgrounds, kick off 3pm. Incredibly, this will be Newry's first league game in seven weeks, our last outing in the Championship resulting in a 2-0 victory over Limavady on 2 December.
Speaking to www.newrycityfc.com, manager Pat McGibbon commented how, “it’s been very frustrating when we were in very good form, scoring goals and not conceding many and you want to keep that run in the league going. We have played every team once and we know what we’ve to play against. A couple of teams such as Ards look like they have the finances to strengthen a bit and they’ll be looking to push on, but I haven’t seen anything in the league to fear. We’ll be fine as long as we continue to show the same team spirit and never say die attitude which we have shown from the start of the season”.
With leaders Ballinamallard hosting Institute and Ards also in the midst of a good run, Newry will be keen to secure 3 points on Saturday. However, McGibbon will be wary that Glebe provided Newry with a tough test when the sides met at the Riada Stadium earlier in the season. That day it took a late Stephen Hughes goal to secure victory for Newry, albeit Newry were later awarded a 3-0 victory in the committee room as Glebe had fielded an ineligible player.
It's important to get out and support the team who have done very little wrong on the pitch this season. In fact, Newry will be aiming to secure an eighth consecutive win, a run that started with the 5-0 thrashing of Larne in November. The team have given their all and deserve our support.
After the game, there will be a fund raising quiz held in the Social Club with questions on general knowledge and soccer. The quiz starts at 5.30pm and it costs £10 to enter a team of up to four people. Let's hope we're toasting three points when that one kicks off.
